Presidential Debates Must Be Constant In Our Political Calendar – Dr Osei Bonsu

Presidential debates should be made a permanent feature in Ghana’s electioneering process if the country is to speed-up its economic development, claims political analyst, Dr Osei Bonsu.

Speaking to Plan B FM, Dr Osei Bonsu asserted that, it is vital for voters to be guided in decision-making at the polls and the surest way to guarantee that is by giving them the opportunity to witness presidential candidates challenging each other’s policies in debates.

Dr Bonsu emphasized that side-stepping an essential activity as the presidential debate, makes Ghana’s democratic process incomplete. He also stressed that voters needed to be presented with the   opportunity to witness the contenders for the highest office of the land square off against each other in presidential debates.

“It is the right of voters to directly hear from the candidates. The debate gives them the chance to analyze the body language and delivery of the candidates. You can hide behind campaign platforms and preach your message, but the debate can expose you in the presence of your political opponent, so it is a must”, Dr Osei Bonsu affirmed.

He further stressed that, “Through the debate the quick-thinking ability of a candidate can be showcased, some voters may even have a change of mind after the debate.  It is necessary for every democratic country. We need to know the mind of those who want to lead us.”

In conclusion, the vocal lecturer questioned those who felt that political debates are unnecessary.  He also cautioned Ghanaians to vote on issues rather than on sentimental attachments.
