President Mahama Orders Purchase Of 1,000 Boxes Of Tomatoes to Support Farmers And Feed SHS Students

Prices Of Tomato Will Drop Due To High Production; But Our Only Problem Is The Post Harvest Loses – Eric Osei Tuffuor

In a decisive move aimed at addressing both food security and agricultural concerns, President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the purchase of 1,000 boxes of tomatoes to be supplied to Senior High School (SHS) students across the country. This directive, announced on Monday, September 15, 2025, comes after farmers raised alarm over the lack of buyers for their produce.

The intervention is expected to provide immediate relief to tomato farmers who were struggling with post-harvest losses due to market saturation. By directing state agencies to absorb the excess produce, President Mahama has not only safeguarded farmers’ livelihoods but also ensured that nutritious meals are made available to students under the Free SHS feeding program.

Agricultural stakeholders have welcomed the move, describing it as a practical demonstration of government’s commitment to supporting local farmers. The decision also reflects a broader policy shift towards promoting local food consumption within public institutions.

Education analysts argue that such initiatives, if sustained, will reduce dependence on imported food products while simultaneously strengthening domestic agriculture. For students, the measure guarantees access to fresh vegetables, contributing to balanced nutrition essential for academic performance and overall well-being.

President Mahama’s directive has been hailed as a win-win solution, bridging the gap between farmer concerns and student welfare. It underscores the administration’s proactive response to agricultural challenges and highlights the role of government in stabilizing markets while meeting social needs.

With this initiative, the President signals a renewed focus on using homegrown solutions to drive food security and economic stability.
