According to a video shared on Twitter by Metro TV Ghana today, Sunday, two men suspected of theft were fatally shot by police in Ashaiman, a suburb of Accra, Ghana.

Reports indicate that police were called to the scene after local residents noticed unusual activity near a shop known for selling electronics and other goods.

The shop owner, who was alerted by neighbors, said he was asleep when he received a phone call about suspicious movements around his store. When he arrived at the scene with a few locals, they found the shop’s front door pried open and noticed some items were missing. Some locals had already confronted the suspects, preventing them from leaving.

Shortly afterward, police arrived and ordered the suspects to surrender. However, according to the officers, the men refused and attempted to escape. Fearing for their safety and the potential risk to bystanders, police acted quickly, resulting in the fatal shooting of the suspects.

The incident has left many Ashaiman residents shocked.

“It’s sad that things had to end this way, but shop break-ins have been increasing lately,” said a local shopkeeper. “People are worried. We all work hard for our businesses, so this hits close to home.”

Ashaiman, like many busy neighborhoods, has been facing challenges with crime. With shops frequently targeted, local business owners have become increasingly vigilant. Some residents are calling for more community patrols or a neighborhood watch program to address these concerns.

In a brief statement, the Ghana Police Service confirmed the fatal shootings, stating that the officers involved followed procedure when the suspects resisted arrest. Police say they will conduct a thorough investigation to understand what happened, and the Inspector General of Police has promised full transparency and a complete report on the incident, reassuring the community that law enforcement is committed to safety while following proper protocols.
