The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has foiled an attempted robbery involving a gold consignment valued at GH¢1.35 million and arrested three suspects in Accra and East Legon.

The arrests were announced by the Director-General of the CID, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Lydia Yaako Donkor, during a press briefing held in Accra on Monday, June 30, 2025.

DCOP Donkor said the operation was based on intelligence gathered about a planned attack on a mining consultant who was scheduled to deliver gold on behalf of a licensed company.

Investigations revealed that the plot had been orchestrated by the consultant’s driver and another accomplice who posed as a bodyguard.

On Thursday, June 26, 2025, officers from the Special Support Unit intercepted the suspects along the Mamfe-Koforidua Road after they detected a sudden change in the consultant’s travel route.

One of the suspects, Kenneth Kyeremateng, was arrested at the scene while trailing the target’s vehicle on a motorbike. The police recovered the gold consignment, which weighed approximately 1.2 kilogrammes.

Two more suspects, Adam Zibo and Masawudu Yusif, were later picked up in East Legon.

According to the police, the pair had provided logistics for the attempted robbery, including an unregistered vehicle, firearms, and financial support. Investigators say the three had conspired for more than a month to carry out the heist.

A fourth individual, identified as Edudzi, was granted bail after police established that he was not directly involved in the robbery.

The three main suspects remain in custody and are assisting police with investigations. They are expected to be arraigned in court in the coming days.

DCOP Donkor commended the police team for their swift action and advised the public to inform the police when moving high-value items.

“Do not assume you can move on your own. Always seek assistance from your local police,” she said.
