The Ashanti Regional Police Command of the Ghana Police Service has described as “unfortunate, false and a fabrication” reports that its officers together with some military men stormed Kumasi Girls’ Senior High School (KUGISS) and assaulted students.
The Command in a press release dated Tuesday, July 20, 2021 narrated that the Bohyen Police District and the Suame Police Division responded to a complaint from the Headmistress of KUGISS that students were demonstrating and destroying properties.
Signed by the Acting Regional Commander, DCOP David Agyemang Adjem, the press release said a similar complaint was lodged by authorities of St Louis SHS at about the same time, prompting the KNUST Police District and Manhyia Police Division to respond by going to the scene.
It said on-the-spot investigations indicated that the students were agitating against the refusal by authorities to allow them go on the mid-semester holiday.
“It is also untrue that the military was involved in bringing the situation under control,” it said. “The only military officers who were present at Kumasi Girls Secondary School were part of a joint patrol team who were close to the school and had gone there to verify what was happening.”
Some of girls had shown injuries sustained during Monday night’s alleged assault by the officers.
“They came to our dormitories. They came beating some people. Even my dormitory they beat them to the extent that some were bleeding,” one student said on anonymity.
But the Command said the officers only went to the schools to persuade the students to return to their dormitories and calm was restored thereafter.
“The respective heads of the schools have been to the Police to thank us for our prompt intervention and so we find it strange for anyone to report in the contrary.”
It assured that the Command remains committed to the cause to maintain law and order in accordance with the constitutional mandate and responsibility.
“We shall endeavour to protect each and every person in the Region as well as their property.”
It asked the public to disregard the videos making rounds on social media.
“The Command will like to assure the general public that the stories and videos are false, untruths and a fabrication to bring the Police Service into disrepute and we condemn this action in no uncertain terms.”
