The Our Lady Of Mercy Auxiliary Knight of St John’s International, ‎has appealed to parents to support girl-child education to enable girls harness their potential and contribute to national development.

Mrs.  Betty Aba Obeng, the president of the group, gave the advice in an interview with Plan-B FM news at Tema community 3 Malibu Estate during breakfast dinner with the Residents.

Mrs. Betty said that parents should support the education of their female children, rather than preventing them from going to the school, adding that such act was unacceptable.

She said that the girl-child required adequate education, and warned against early marriage and teenage Pregnancy.

She urged parents, especially mothers to strive and ensure that their girl-child acquired formal education, no matter what it would cost.

“Giving the girl-child education is a necessity and not an option; it is not a waste of resources or time. ‎Arming girl-child with education will make her formidable and prepare her for future responsibilities, as she exudes confidence that will make her think out of the box,” she said.

Mrs. Betty stressed that the girl-child should be allowed to explore her world educationally. According to her, education is the only weapon that could make women to equate with their male counterparts, and appealed to parents to save the girl-child from the looming danger of illiteracy. “‎Parents should give the girl-child opportunity to develop and mature physically before venturing into marriage,” she added.

Mrs. Obeng explained that this kind gesture by the Association is in fulfilment of the Bible and in furtherance of the vision of the group.

Continuing, she pointed the outbreak of global pandemic, COVID-19 has in a way compelled people to reduce their support for the vulnerable. She noted that it should be the other way round with members of society increasing their support for such persons.

She urged believers not to neglect the needy but to make use of every opportunity to help and bless them. “This is the time we must show genuine love to the needy”.

Continuing with her address, Mrs. Obeng urged the Ghanaian public not to relax on observing the COVID-19 protocols regardless of whatever activities they were engaged in. She commented that it was wrong for people to assume that the infection rate of the virus has reduced thereby encouraging them to lose their guards.

She warned against complacency on grounds of recent statistics on Covid -19 adding that “we should be careful we are taken by surprise”.

Some of the residents who attended the event expressed their profound gratitude and thanked the organizers for the kind gesture aimed at raising awareness for the education of the girl-child.

Mr. Owusu Bempah, the Assemblyman for Community 3 Electoral Area, urged the residents in his electoral area to be active and promote the idea of community policing, an effective tool that will enable them fight crime in partnership with police and other institutions.
