Lady Charlotte Hanson, Head of Public Relations Coordinating Division at the Information Service Department, has warned against the dangers of overspending to impress others, cautioning that it can lead to financial disaster.
Appearing on Plan B FM’s Nyansapɔ Fie show, hosted by Nana Asabea, Lady Hanson stressed the importance of living within one’s means and avoiding unnecessary expenditure to keep up appearances.
She urged individuals to prioritise financial prudence and responsibility, highlighting that overspending can have long-term consequences on one’s financial stability.
Lady Marilyn Abeka-Daniels, an adjunct lecturer at the University of Media, Arts and Communication’s Institute of Journalism (UNIMAC-IJ), shared her insights on borrowing. While acknowledging that borrowing is a part of life, she emphasised that it should not become a habit.
“Borrowing isn’t necessarily bad, but it shouldn’t be repeated,” she said.
“There’s usually a root cause, starting with small things like groceries, which can escalate into financial problems.” Lady Abeka-Daniels encouraged individuals to identify the underlying reasons for their borrowing and address them to avoid financial difficulties.
Prophet Ebenezer Dunamis, Head Pastor of Army of God Revival Centre, echoed similar sentiments. He expressed concern that some individuals live their lives based on borrowing, which can undermine their dignity.
“I’ve had a church member approach me for assistance, only to encounter the same person with the same request later,” he said. “This pattern of behaviour erodes one’s dignity and must be avoided.”
Prophet Dunamis attributed debt addiction to an individual’s environment and upbringing, highlighting the need for people to break the cycle of debt and live responsibly.
By doing so, individuals can regain control of their finances and live a more dignified life.
