The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in July 2023, embark on what it describes as ‘Operation Zero’ to recover payment for outstanding electricity bills.
The exercise is expected to last for about three months.

The Public Relations Officer for Tema Region Madam Sekyiwaa Mensah together with Madam Barbara Musey a customer relation officer, marketing relation officer madam Puumaaya, and National Public Relations Officer Esther Anjoula.

Speaking on Plan B FM morning show NKOSUONSEM in a one on one interview with Nana Yaw Abrompah, Madam Sekyiwaa said that, customers have been cooperative since the beginning of operation zero in collecting revenue and has also educate the public the need on why they have to pay their bills.

The ECG said it staff took the opportunity to visit all households to capture consumers who are not in their database and billed them instantly via the ECG digital customer platform.

“During the special exercise, ECG will grant a moratorium to all who are consuming electricity without paying for it to allow them to visit their respective ECG offices for immediate regularisation of their supply.
ECG pleads with customers who have not yet received their bills to pay on account to be credited accordingly.”

Madam Barbara Musey a customer relation officer said the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is going strictly cashless. This means that all 300 ECG offices across the country will only accept mobile money and bank deposit slip for payments, but no more physical cash.

But customers who want to visit the nearest ECG and pay, are required to load up their cash to their mobile money account before they visit any ECG office to pay bills.

Alternatively, a customer can also take a deposit slip from any ECG office and visit his or her bank and make payment, as ECG is integrated with all banks in the country.

So once you make the payment it reflects at ECG so there is no need for you to return to ECG and present any receipt.
She stressed that there will be no additional charges like e-levy or any service charges applied to payments to ECG. If your bill is ghs100 you pay exactly GHS100. No charges, no e-levy.

The service is being rolled out nationwide and can be accessed anywhere in the country, even on feature phones via the short code – *266#.

The National Public Relations Officer Esther Anjoula also said that the new system is designed to eliminate the incidents of non-payment of bills and its attendant bribery and corruption and urge the general public to desist from illegal connection because they have equipments that detect illegal connection and if is found caught with illegal connection could face imprisonment.
