The bodies of two men who went missing after a canoe carrying six people capsized on the Offin Rivernear New Achiase in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region have been recovered, local officials confirmed on Friday.

The accident occurred last Thursday morning when the canoe, reportedly paddled by an inexperienced operator, overturned mid-journey while transporting the group to the Afepaye bank of the river.

According to a police report, the incident was first reported by Nana Osei Tutu, the Benkumhene of Achiase, to the Adobewura Police at about 9:50 a.m.

A search party managed to rescue four people — identified as 22-year-old Anabel Paul and 28-year-old Amina Daniel, both Nigerian nationals, along with 42-year-old Ghanaian, Alex Kwadwo Acheampong. A fourth rescued person has not yet been identified.

Police said the two Nigerian nationals were admitted to the Ntoboroso Clinic, where they are receiving treatment.

Personnel from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) joined local authorities in the recovery effort, which successfully retrieved the bodies of the two missing men.

The Offin River has a history of fatal accidents. In 2021, four people drowned in the same stretch of the river, with only three bodies recovered.

Police say investigations into Thursday’s incident are ongoing.
