NSB Case: Public Deserves Answers on Missing ₵49m — Prof. Kwaku Azar

Most CEOs are strategically positioned Party operatives tasked with diverting state funds-Prof. Azar

Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare, known well as Prof Kwaku Azar, has weighed in on the ongoing discussions surrounding the arrest of the immediate past Director-General of the National Signal Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu-Boahene, and his wife, Angela Adjei-Boateng.

At a press briefing in Accra on Monday, March 24, Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine detailed how the couple allegedly diverted $7 million in public funds through fraudulent transactions.

According to him, the couple used a private company, BNC Communications Bureau, to misappropriate funds meant for a cyber defense system contract between the Government of Ghana and Israeli firm ISC Holdings.

He revealed that while serving as NSB Director-General, Mr. Adu-Boahene transferred ₵49 million—equivalent to $7 million at the time—from a National Security account to a company he co-owns with his wife.

Following the revelations, many, including Samuel Atta Akyea, lawyer for the suspects, criticized the Attorney General, accusing him of acting as both prosecutor and judge in the case.

However, in a Facebook post on Tuesday, March 25, the renowned legal scholar argued that while due process must be followed, the public deserves to know the truth.

“The AG has every right to inform the public. He’s not just a lawyer; he represents all of us. When public funds are involved, silence isn’t an option.

“Why speaking to the public matters:
• It ensures transparency.
• It reassures Ghanaians that no one is above the law.

• It counters misinformation.
• And yes, it deters others from thinking looting is a no-risk game.

“Let’s not shame the ‘court of public opinion.’ Public trust matters. Democracy thrives when people are informed, not when they are left in the dark. Yes, everyone deserves a fair trial. But when ₵49 million goes missing, the public deserves answers too,” he wrote.
