NPP Youth Organiser Abanga announces planned ‘Y3GYEY3SIKA’ demonstration

New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Youth Organiser Abanga Yakubu Fusani has announced plans for a demonstration dubbed “Y3GYEY3SIKA” to demand accountability over public spending, job creation and the rising cost of living in Ghana.

In a statement announcing the planned protest, Abanga criticised the government over several economic concerns, including cocoa producer prices, fuel costs, student accommodation fees, taxation of digital services and the availability of jobs for young people.

“Enough is Enough!” he declared, calling on Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams to account for public funds.

Abanga also questioned the government’s cocoa producer price, citing GH¢2,500 per bag against GH¢3,100, and demanding explanations for the difference.

He argued that rising fuel prices, increasing hostel fees and financial pressures on businesses were adding to the economic difficulties facing Ghanaians.

The NPP youth organiser further criticised the 20 per cent value-added tax (VAT) on digital services, arguing that the tax placed an additional burden on people who depend on social media and other online platforms to earn a living.

He also challenged the government’s 24-hour economy policy, questioning the number of jobs created under the initiative and the opportunities available to young people.

According to Abanga, positive macroeconomic indicators would mean little to citizens who continued to struggle financially.

“Celebrated macroeconomic indicators look artificial when ordinary pockets remain empty,” he said.

He described the proposed demonstration as peaceful and said it was intended to press for greater accountability, employment opportunities and economic relief.

Abanga also warned that arrests would not silence demands for answers on public expenditure or divert attention from calls for accountability.

However, he did not specify a date, venue or route for the proposed demonstration in the statement.

The announcement comes amid continuing political debate over the government’s economic performance, public spending and efforts to address unemployment and the cost of living.
