NPP to contest Ayawaso East by-election – Justin Kodua [Audio]

Justin Kodua Flaws John Boadu To Become NPP’s New General Secretary

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has confirmed that the party will contest the upcoming Ayawaso East by-election and is confident of victory.

“I don’t see any reason why we shouldn’t go for the election,” he said in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem.

His remarks come after the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the area Abdul-Ganiyu Ibrahim suggested that the NPP should not participate in the by-election as a mark of respect to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to Mr. Kodua, this position highlights what he describes as the “hypocrisy of the NDC.”

“It is rather unfortunate to hear such statements,” he added. “Why shouldn’t we go for elections? Your MP has passed away, and you are telling us not to contest? I am very surprised by that.”

The Ayawaso East parliamentary seat became vacant following the death of its Member of Parliament, Naser Toure Mahama, on Sunday, January 4, 2026, after a short illness. Mr. Mahama, a four-term MP, represented the constituency on the ticket of the NDC.

Mr. Kodua recalled previous instances, saying, “When our MP, Ernest Kumi, passed away, the NDC came to contest the election in Akwatia. So, what has changed now? This is not about whether we will win or not. We are going to the elections, and they should not assume otherwise.”

He added that the NPP is already conducting a candidate search and will participate fully in the Ayawaso East by-election.

“We are going to test our popularity, and we will go for the elections,” he said.
