A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communications team, Hamza Suhuyini has said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has realised that GoldBod and its Chief Executive Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, are central to the NDC government’s economic record and is therefore working to discredit them.
According to Suhuyini, the criticism directed at GoldBod is not only about the specific concerns being raised against the institution or its leadership.
He believes the NPP understands the political importance of GoldBod to the NDC’s economic narrative.
“It is not just because they have issues that we all know against Sammy Gyamfi. It is also because they understand that the bedrock of our economic success story is GoldBod,” he said while addressing party faithfuls at an event.
Suhuyini argued that undermining GoldBod could serve a wider political objective by weakening public confidence in one of the institutions the NDC is using to explain its economic performance.
“So as a political strategy, discredit it, let the people not accept it as being viable, so that the whole government economic machinery will begin to crumble,” he said.
He said the NDC should therefore recognise the political dimension of the attacks and be prepared to defend GoldBod.
“Are we going to allow them to do that? No,” he said.
Suhuyini maintained that once the opposition succeeds in controlling the economic narrative, it could use that position to strengthen its case for a return to government.
“Because immediately we see that to them, they will take control of the economic narrative and will begin to use that and add that to their corruption index and begin to make a claim for the presidency again,” he said.
He therefore urged NDC supporters not to allow criticism of GoldBod to overshadow what he described as the government’s economic achievements.
