Edward Ennin, the former Member of Parliament for Obuasi East, has expressed his disappointment with the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following what he describes as the party’s dismal performance in the 2024 elections.
According to Adomonline on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, In a candid interview on Adom FM’s Burning Issues, Ennin called for the party’s top brass to either resign or face removal, asserting that their leadership has not only failed to deliver but has also brought shame upon the party.
“I think the disgrace our executives have brought upon us is enough reason for them to resign. However, if they fail to do so, we have the option to sack them and place the party in more capable hands,” Ennin stated.
According to Ennin, the NPP entered the elections without a clear and effective strategy, which contributed to their defeat.
He criticized the leadership for lacking the foresight to salvage the situation despite knowing the party was facing challenges.
He believes the internal dynamics of the party, particularly the way elections were handled, played a significant role in the party’s poor showing.
Ennin pointed to a lack of unity and widespread dissatisfaction among party members.
He cited what he described as “mafia” tactics during the internal elections, where procedural irregularities favored certain candidates over others.
This created an atmosphere of disillusionment, leading to a drop in support among key party members and voters. “When those who lost in the internal elections felt sidelined, they withdrew their support, which affected the party’s overall performance,” he explained.
The former MP argued that the current leadership had lost touch with the party’s base and allowed divisions to fester.
“The leaders have divided us, and that has led to apathy among our supporters. It is time to reclaim the party from their hands and place it in the hands of those who can make it attractive again,” Ennin stated.
On past leadership, Ennin compared the current NPP executives unfavorably to former party figures, including ex-chairman Paul Afoko and former general secretary Kwabena Agyapong, who were dismissed in 2016 due to internal disagreements.
Ennin suggested that those leaders were more competent than the current leadership.
