A communicator for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Anning, has expressed disappointment over the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, describing the decision by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government as politically motivated.
Speaking on Nkosuo Nsem, Mr. Anning said the NDC had long desired the removal of Justice Torkornoo, even during their time in opposition. “I am not surprised they have sacked her now that they are in power. They openly said they wanted her out,” he remarked.
According to him, the NDC views the move as a way of “reciprocating” what they claim the NPP did when the former Electoral Commission Chair, Charlotte Osei, was removed over allegations of misconduct. “That’s what they keep saying openly, but the situations are different,” he stressed.
Mr. Anning also questioned why President [Name] has not yet released the official reasons for the dismissal of Justice Torkornoo, despite the fact that a committee was set up to look into petitions submitted for her removal.
“The President must come out clearly and tell Ghanaians why the Chief Justice was removed. Without that, this looks like pure political revenge,” he emphasized.
