Ghana finished the 24th African Athletics Championships without a gold medal after a disappointing final day at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium on Sunday, May 17.

Team Ghana finished 17th on the medals table with five medals, made up of one silver and four bronze medals, despite hopes of a strong finish in front of the home crowd.

The final day of competition featured action in more than 12 disciplines, including the high jump, javelin, and several track and field finals, bringing an end to days of intense competition in Accra.

Ghana’s final medal hopes faded after team captain Joseph Paul Amoah placed fifth in the men’s 200m final in a tightly contested race.

The women’s 4x400m relay team also narrowly missed out on a medal after finishing fourth, while the men’s 4x400m team struggled to keep pace and ended last with a time of 3:05.14.

Ghana’s medal haul included bronze medals in the men’s and women’s 4x100m relay events. Alex Amankwah secured bronze in the men’s 800m, while Florence Agyemang also claimed bronze in the women’s 400m.

Ghana’s only silver medal came through high jumper Esther Obenewaa.

South Africa topped the championship standings with 18 medals, including nine gold, three silver, and six bronze medals.

Kenya finished second with 17 medals, while Ethiopia placed third with five gold, four silver, and five bronze medals.
