The Northern Regional Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alhaji Alhassan Abdul-Hamid, also widely known as Alhaji Gbewaa, has been released on bail following an overnight police detention for beating up a fellow female executive,Hajia Shamima Yakubu, the party’s regional treasurer.

Supporters of the party, who besieged the police station and clamoured for his release, welcomed Chairman Gbewaa after his Monday afternoon detention.

Alhaji Gbewaa stands accused of assaulting the main opposition party’s Northern Regional Treasurer, Hajia Shamima Yakubu, during a party executive meeting at the regional office.

Turning himself in on January 15, 2024, after being declared wanted, Chairman Gbewaa reported to the Regional police headquarters in Tamale.

In response to the incident, which occurred during a regional executive meeting, the NDC released a statement condemning the attack onHajia Shamima Yakubu, whosustained bruises on her face and eye, prompting her to report the incident to the police and seek medical attention.

The party’s General Secretary, Fifi Kwetey, signed the condemnation statement that said the party learnt with “shock and disappointment”, reports of a physical attack on the person of Hajia Shamima Yakubu by the regional party officer.

The party said it “condemns in the strongest possible terms this assault on a party official, resulting in her treatment at a hospital.”

The party took “a very serious view of the conduct of the party officer responsible for the assault”, noting that “at the next meeting of its Functional Executive Committee meeting, measures will be taken to address the matter thoroughly to leave no doubt in everyone’s mind that the party does not approve of unlawful acts of assault and battery”.

“The party wishes to also clarify that reports claiming that the incident happened in the presence of any national executive member of the party are inaccurate”, the statement corrected, insisting: “There was not a single national executive member present at the meeting at which the Regional Treasurer was assaulted”.

The NDC noted that “the said party meeting was called to discuss campaign strategy and had nothing to do with any reconciliation, accounts, or allied matters”.

“The NDC wants to place on record its determination to ensure that all its members adhere strictly to the long-cherished practices that have made our internal politics the enviable attraction of teeming millions of the people of Ghana, and from which we draw the confidence of being the next government in waiting.”
