A group of loyalists within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the appointment of Anthony Kwasi Sarpong as the Acting Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

In a press statement issued on Wednesday, January 22, the group described the appointment by President John Dramani Mahama as disappointing and urged its immediate reconsideration.

The statement commended President Mahama for his efforts in assembling a competent team for public service roles over the past two weeks.

It acknowledged his commitment to fulfilling his promises to Ghanaians by ensuring equitable representation in critical government appointments.

However, the group highlighted concerns about the exclusion of deserving NDC loyalists in favour of individuals with ties to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Citing Mr Sarpong’s previous association with the NPP, the group argued that his appointment was unsuitable.

They noted that Mr Sarpong was appointed to the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG) by former President Nana Akufo-Addo in September 2020, alongside other NPP-aligned personalities.

“It is troubling that such a figure is given a distinguished political appointment when numerous experienced and committed NDC members are overlooked,” the statement read.

The group issued a stern warning to President Mahama, demanding the immediate withdrawal of Mr Sarpong’s appointment.

They threatened to organise protests if their concerns are not addressed, emphasising that the hard work of NDC members in securing the party’s victory in the 2024 elections must not be disregarded.

“Mr President, respectfully, please do the needful. There are other people more deserving of this position than this NPP-stained person,” the statement concluded.
