The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued an ultimatum to the Ghana Police Service, demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of about 20 individuals accused of attacking its National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, parliamentary candidate for Akwatia, Bernard Bediako, and other party executives during a one-week observation for the late Member of Parliament for Akwatia.
The incident occurred on Friday, August 29, 2025 during the one-week commemoration of the late Ernest Kumi at the Wenchi Durbar Grounds.
The NDC delegation, which included national, regional, and constituency executives as well as MPs, said it had been formally invited to the event.
However, their presence was reportedly met with hostility, as a group identified by the NDC as supporters of the opposition New Patriotic Party(NPP) allegedly attempted to physically assault Asiedu Nketiah and his security team.

According to the NDC, the attack also prevented Bernard Bediako from entering the funeral grounds, an act the party described as deeply disrespectful, particularly as it distressed the late MP’s widow.
In a statement signed by Deputy Communications Officer, Godwin Ako Gunn, the NDC accused the police of selective enforcement of the law, pointing to their swift action in cases involving NDC members, compared with what it called a reluctance to act when NPP supporters are implicated.
The party demanded that police arrest the attackers, described as known residents of Boadua, Wenchi, Akwatia, and surrounding communities, by Monday, September 1, 2025.
“The police cannot be seen to act swiftly against the NDC in some cases, only to drag their feet when it involves the NPP,” the statement stressed.

The party further warned, “We demand swift action, else we may have incidents to deal with on or before the day of the election.”
Failure to comply, the NDC said, would force the party to take matters into its own hands by delivering the perpetrators to the police by Tuesday, September 2, 2025.
“Anything less than this will see us helping them in their duties on Monday and Tuesday,” the statement cautioned.
The NDC emphasised its readiness to assist law enforcement in identifying the culprits, pointing to video evidence of the attack that has been widely circulated.
The party expressed concern that continued inaction could heighten tensions ahead of the Akwatia by-election, urging the police to act decisively to maintain peace and uphold justice.
