Speaking on Plan B FM’s Nkosuo Nsem morning show, National Democratic Congress (NDC) communicator Samuel Aborbi voiced deep concern over the growing pressure on Ghana to soften its stance on LGBTQ+ issues. He recalled that since the days of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, no Ghanaian president has openly endorsed LGBTQ+ rights. However, he highlighted a turning point during former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration, when the then-president stated in an interview that LGBTQ+ was “bound to happen” — a comment Aborbi believes opened the door to international pressure and confusion about Ghana’s position.
Aborbi, speaking passionately as a representative of the NDC, criticized what he sees as a lack of urgency from the current administration in finalizing the Anti-LGBTQ Bill. He reminded listeners that the NDC, while in opposition, stood strongly against any form of legalization or promotion of LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana. He emphasized that the party made clear promises to uphold Ghana’s cultural and moral values — promises that must now be fulfilled with concrete legislative action.
Expressing confidence in the current leadership, Aborbi called on the President to show that Ghana has a “listening government” by promptly signing the bill into law once the review process is complete. He noted that the overwhelming majority of Ghanaians have spoken against LGBTQ+ practices and that it is now the responsibility of the government to reflect that will through decisive and timely action.
