NDC Communicator Calls for Armed Security To Match Force Against Illegal Miners

56 illegal miners arrested in Tarkwa-Nsuaem crackdown

Dela Apetor, a communicator for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Tema West, has called for a tougher stance in the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Speaking on Nkosuo Nsem, Mr. Apetor stressed that the activities of illegal miners remain the root cause of many of Ghana’s environmental and social challenges. He likened the miners to armed robbers, alleging that most of them operate with weapons while destroying lands and water bodies.

“The illegal mines are the main cause of our problems, and I see them as armed robbers because when you go to the mining site, almost all of them are armed. They are stealing and disrupting our lands,” he said.

According to him, the deployment of security forces to galamsey-prone areas should not be taken lightly. He argued that officers tasked to protect the country’s resources must be fully equipped and armed to confront miners who resist the law with weapons.

“Security forces deployed to the areas are to go there with protection and should also be armed and fight them equally,” he emphasized.
