The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has called on parents and guardians to take an active role in guiding their children in the digital space to protect them from online threats.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s social and lifestyle show “Nyansapɔ Fie” with host Ohene Kinnah, Fidel Nii-Akuffo Bortey, Tema West Municipal Director of NCCE, emphasised that parents have a constitutional mandate to safeguard their children’s rights in the digital world, just as they do in the physical world.
”Parents should educate their children about online safety and digital citizenship to prevent exposure to harmful content, such as sextortion, sexting, bullying and pedophilia”, he said.
”Guiding children in the digital space is crucial for their well-being and development in today’s technology-driven world. Parents and guardians should take an active role in monitoring their children’s online activities and providing guidance on responsible digital behaviour.”
Gifty Agyeiwaa Badu, NCCE Director for Tema Metropolitan, added that parents and guardians should train their wards well to avoid getting into trouble online, which would give them peace of mind.
She emphasised that just as children have rights to life, education, healthcare and other basic necessities, they also have the right to be guided when it comes to online activities. In particular, she highlighted the importance of teaching children how to navigate online platforms safely, identify potential risks and respond appropriately to ensure their own protection.
By working together, parents, guardians and the NCCE can help create a safer and more responsible digital environment for Ghana’s youth.
