Understanding the balance between discipline, correction and punishment is essential to fostering meaningful growth in our homes, institutions and workplaces.
Speaking on Nyansapo Fie on Plan B FM, hosted by Akosua Gyamfua, Rev. Benjamin Boateng discussed the true purpose of punishment and the role of discipline in guiding individuals towards meaningful reform.
Rev. Boateng explained that punishment inherently involves consequences for wrongdoing, which may include pain, temporary loss of privileges or damage to one’s reputation. He, however, stressed that while institutions and society cannot completely eliminate punitive measures, there are limits that must not be crossed.
According to him, punishment must never degenerate into cruelty or excessive harm. Authorities, he noted, must remain firm and consistent in enforcing standards while ensuring that disciplinary measures serve their intended purpose.
A key aspect of the discussion was the distinction between legal or societal punishment and spiritual discipline. Rev. Boateng explained that in religious settings, the focus should be on constructive discipline—training, correcting and guiding individuals towards a better future—while ultimate judgment and retribution remain in the hands of God.
The conversation also examined how accountability manifests across different areas of life, including education, the workplace, psychological well-being, and the legal and judicial systems.
Rev. Boateng emphasized that consequences should ideally encourage individuals to reflect on their actions and make positive changes, rather than create resentment or a desire for retaliation.
He stressed that the ultimate objective of corrective action should be transformation, not revenge. By combining firm accountability with empathy, he said, societies and institutions can uphold discipline and order without undermining the dignity of the individual.
The discussion formed part of Nyansapo Fie’s broader conversations on issues affecting individuals, families and society.
