A senior lecturer at the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana, Legon, Professor Ransford Edward Gyampo, has posed critical questions about the National Cathedral’s status, urging President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to provide clarity on the project’s future.
The National Cathedral, initiated in March 2020, aimed to serve as a state-of-the-art national place of worship and venue for national events.
Despite GH₵58 million spent, construction remains stalled at the foundation level as of 2024.
With 59 days left to the end of Akufo-Addo’s presidency, the outspoken academia took to Facebook to enquiry about the status of the project once hailed as “hope” for Ghana upon completion.
“What is the state of the National Cathedral, Mr. Akufo Addo?” Professor Gyampo quizzed.
“Will you still build it? If you won’t, isn’t it just courteous for you to tell us?” he added.
Prof. Gyampo also questioned President Akufo-Addo’s accountability.
“Can a President just pump the taxpayer’s money into a hole and leave office just like that?”
