The Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon, has rejected claims that evidence needed to investigate the collapse of the New Town D/A School building has been destroyed.
The response follows concerns raised by the Ghana Institution of Engineers (GhIE), that the clearing of debris at the accident scene was premature and could compromise investigations into the cause of the collapse.
Speaking to Citi News on Tuesday, March 31, Major (Rtd) Kuyon insisted that any credible organisation interested in investigating the incident had the opportunity to be present at the scene and could still engage NADMO for relevant information.
“It is obvious that they are desk engineers. If they were proper engineers, they should be in the field with us. We are field people; we don’t wait for anybody. If they want evidence, they should talk to us and we will collaborate as a team. We have all the technocrats in our team. We work together with 48 engineers,” he said.
President of the Ghana Institution of Engineers, Ludwig Annang Hesse, had earlier criticised NADMO’s handling of the situation.
Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Monday, March 30, he described the approach as flawed, particularly the decision to clear debris before crucial evidence could be collected.
According to him, the premature removal of rubble has made it difficult for the institution to gather the necessary evidence to determine the actual cause of the collapse.
