Ghana’s Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has confirmed the interception of 73 slabs of a substance suspected to be cocaine, weighing a total of 89.74 kilograms, at Swissport Ghana Limited, located at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) freight terminal.
The operation was carried out in collaboration with other security agencies as part of intensified surveillance and interdiction measures at Ghana’s major entry points.
Details of the Seizure

According to a press statement issued by NACOC, the intercepted shipment was found in a container designated for export. The contents, suspected to be narcotics, were concealed among legitimate cargo items. Preliminary field tests have confirmed the presence of cocaine-like substances, though official laboratory testing is still ongoing to confirm the exact composition.
The seizure marks one of the largest cocaine busts at the Kotoka International Airport in recent years.
Ongoing Investigations and Arrests
Authorities have begun investigations to trace the origin and intended destination of the cargo. NACOC has not ruled out the involvement of an international drug trafficking ring and has so far arrested at least one suspect believed to be connected to the shipment. More arrests are expected in the coming days.
The Commission says it is working closely with international partners, including INTERPOL and the UNODC, to uncover the broader network behind the attempted export.
National Security on Alert
In light of the seizure, NACOC reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s borders from being used as transit routes for illicit drugs. “This is a firm signal to criminal syndicates that Ghana is not a safe haven for drug trafficking,” the Commission stated.
Public Reaction
News of the bust has spread across social media platforms, with many Ghanaians commending the NACOC for its vigilance. However, others are calling for a deeper probe into how such a large quantity of drugs could make it that far into the shipping process undetected.
