MPs Involved in Galamsey will be held accountable – Bagbin declares

Bagbin Leaves Parliament Following Delays In Commencing Sitting

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has issued a stern warning to Members of Parliament (MPs), stating that any legislator caught participating in illegal mining (galamsey) will face severe consequences.

Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, January 28, Bagbin underscored the urgency of tackling the galamsey menace, which has caused significant environmental damage across Ghana.

He emphasized the responsibility of MPs to serve as role models, advocating for the law instead of engaging in activities that harm the nation’s natural resources.

“We must lead by example,” Bagbin urged, adding that MPs should distance themselves entirely from galamsey operations. He warned that any member involved would face strict action, reaffirming Parliament’s resolve to confront the issue head-on.

Illegal mining remains a persistent problem in Ghana, with water bodies and forests suffering from the environmental impacts.

Despite various government efforts, including task forces and military operations, galamsey continues to thrive, in part due to the complicity of powerful figures, including some politicians.
