Most Students Referred Or Dismissed Due To Poor Academic Performance Linked to Social Media Addiction – UEW Lecturers

Lecturers from the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) have highlighted that most students who are either referred for disciplinary action or dismissed from the university due to poor academic performance are victims of social media addiction.

According to these lecturers, many students at UEW and other universities are addicted to social media, a situation that adversely affects their academic performance on campus.

Lecturers from the Department of Counselling and Psychology at UEW emphasized the urgent need for strict policies to monitor and guide students’ use of social media in universities and workplaces across the country.

They warned that the negative impact of social media overuse is enormous and often overlooked.

Addiction to social media commonly leads to low productivity, not only in academic settings but also in workplaces and personal growth.

Although students at UEW have been restricted from excessive use of social media on campus, many still disregard the rules, which often leads to poor academic outcomes.

While social media offers some positive benefits, its overuse, particularly among the youth, causes more harm than good.

The lecturers, therefore, called for the implementation of effective measures to control and regulate social media use among university students to reduce the number of dismissals due to poor academic performance linked to social media addiction.

In a recent interview with Ghone News, Yaw Boagyan spoke with lecturers from the University of Education, Winneba’s Department of Counselling and Psychology during a symposium on the negative impact of social media expressed concern over the widespread social media addiction among students.

They noted that social media addiction significantly hampers students’ ability to focus on their studies.

Some students also shared their views on social media’s negative impact.

Miss Beatrice Afful, a student group member, urged her fellow students to reduce time spent on social media and concentrate more on their academic work, the primary reason for their admission to the university.

She emphasized that students must prioritize their studies to succeed.

The main challenge students face on campus is social media addiction, which severely impacts their academic progress.

She called for university authorities to introduce effective regulations to curb the negative effects of social media on campus.
