Madam Akua Ansah, Western Regional Director of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has bemoaned the spate of road accidents in the Region, attributing it to human errors characterised by indiscipline on the part of drivers, passengers and pedestrians.
She mentioned some of the human errors as the corrupt ways in acquiring driver’s license, over inflated or under inflated tyres, unaligned or shimmy tyres, non-frequent maintenance of vehicles, making calls while driving and indiscriminate crossing of roads among others.
Madam Ansah who made this known to the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Takoradi, observed that the first quarter of last year saw a reduction in total fatality cases recording 25 cases as against this year’s first quarter of 32, showing an increased variance of seven (7).
She lamented on the situation, where drivers engaged in activities like “hit and run”, riding on the shoulders of the road, parking on the pavements and pedestrian walkways, and advised that drivers should desist from such and also give way to traffic on the left.
She therefore cautioned pedestrians to desist from selling on the pavements or taking over the road, fidgeting with mobile phones and using earphones with loud sounds, and the wearing of dark colored clothes while walking by the roads at night.
“Don’t wear dark clothes at night and walk close to the roads because it makes you invisible, especially where there are no street lights.
Athletes and sports personnel who train along the streets should also get reflectors on during their exercise to avoid being knocked down”, she emphasized.
