Minority force adjournment of Parliament over lack of quorum

The Parliament of Ghana was forced to adjourn during its sitting on Friday, February 7, 2025.

GhanaWeb’s Parliament correspondent, George Ayisi, reported that the sitting was adjourned after members of the Minority Caucus raised concerns over the inadequate number of MPs present.

The Minority pointed out that the number of MPs present did not meet the required one-third of the House, which is approximately 93 members.

The Deputy Minority Chief Whip, Habib Iddrisu, raised the issue just a few minutes after the sitting commenced.

However, the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Bernard Ahiafor, who was presiding over the sitting, initially disregarded Habib’s concern and allowed the proceedings to continue.

After 30 minutes of raising the issue about the lack of quorum, Habib stood again and insisted that the proceedings should be adjourned.

The First Deputy Speaker then ruled that the House, which requires the presence of 91 members to conduct business, lacked quorum, as only 74 MPs were present.

He subsequently adjourned the sitting to Tuesday at 10:00 AM.
