Okyehene Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin has confirmed that taskforce was sent to Asamag Tamfoe because the Minerals Commission of Ghana never released mining concession to the youth of the community as they claim.

According to the Secretary of Akyem Abuakwa Mr. Daniel Ofori Atta who revealed this in an interview with Sompa FM in Kumasi, he indicated that Okyehene himself spoke to the boss of the Minerals Commission a month ago and confirmed he has not released lands to the people of Asamang Tamfoe for mining activities.

“About a month ago, Okyehene spoke with the Minerals Commission boss and he told him he has not released any mining concession to anyone at Asamang Tamfoe to work in the said forest”, Mr Daniel Ofori Atta revealed

The Secretary of Akyem Abuakwa further hinted that, taskforce of the Okyehene were sent to the area to stop people from polluting the environment based on the information he had from the Minerals Commission boss.

“So it was the basics of that confirmation that the taskforce went there”, he said.

Last week in a video that went viral on social media had the taskforce of Okyehene exchanging gunfire with some people believed to be illegal miners at Asamang Tamfoe

The incident occurred between some residents of Asamang Tamfoe and Okyehene’s Environmental Taskforce led by the Chief of Kyebi –Apapam, Nana Okogeaman Apegya Fori II

Residents of Asamang Tamfoe led by Nana Boakye Darkwa, the Chairman of the Community Mining Committee in a press conference have also registered their displeasure over the incident.

They vowed to do everything possible to resist attempts by any group including the Small-Scale Miners Association from embarking on any mining activity in the area.

At least, sixteen people have been arrested after the incident according to the police.
