An NDC Communication Team member in the Kpone Katamanso Constituency, Francis Melo, has called on Ghanaians to support the upcoming SIM card re-registration exercise as part of efforts to curb fraud and armed robbery.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s Nkosuo Nsem, hosted by Kofi Sekyi, Melo stressed the importance of using accurate biometric details during the registration process to ensure credibility and effectiveness.
His comments follow recent revelations by the National Communications Authority (NCA), which disclosed that an audit of SIM card registration data from 2021 to 2023 showed zero fingerprint matches when cross-checked with the national identity database. The development has raised concerns about the reliability of existing records.
According to the Director-General of the NCA, Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko, the findings form part of preparations for a planned SIM re-registration exercise aimed at improving data accuracy and national security.
“In June 2025, we took a sample of about 2 million registrations and tested it against the NIA database. We found that some SIM records could not be verified. As for the fingerprint, there was zero match,” he revealed during a stakeholder engagement on Tuesday, March 17, 2026.
He explained that the inconsistencies were partly due to differences in biometric capture methods. “Fundamentally, the NIA fingerprint was taken with contact, whereas what we did with the mobile registration was contactless,” he added.
Reacting to the development, Melo described the move by the Communications Minister as being in the right direction. He urged telecom operators to cooperate fully with authorities to eliminate corruption and strengthen the integrity of the system.
He further emphasized that the re-registration process must be tightened with robust security features to prevent future discrepancies and enhance public confidence in the system.
