The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has announced that all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) will now be required to make budgetary allocations for their electricity consumption.
Speaking during a meeting between the Energy Committee and various power sector agencies on Thursday, May 15, Jinapor emphasized the need for MDAs to take responsibility for their electricity bills, noting that while some critical institutions have been identified, exemptions will apply.
Reacting to the directive, energy expert Benjamin Nsiah expressed support for the initiative, describing it as “long overdue.”
In an interview with Plan B 104.5 FM’s Ebanosen, hosted by Ohene Kinnah, Nsiah explained that holding institutions accountable for their energy usage would encourage more responsible consumption.
He proposed two practical measures to optimize energy efficiency:
- Setting energy consumption limits for each institution to reduce wastage; and
- Installing prepaid meters to allow institutions to monitor and manage their own electricity use.
Nsiah further recommended equipping essential institutions like hospitals and schools with solar panels to decrease their dependence on the national grid.
This initiative, he noted, would not only enhance energy efficiency but also promote a more sustainable future.
