A joint task force comprising the Food and Drugs Authority, Fisheries Commission, Tema Metropolitan Assembly, and the Criminal Investigations Department has launched an urgent investigation into a reported mass fish death at the Tema Shipyard.
In a statement issued on April 9, 2026, the institutions disclosed that the incident was first detected on April 6, when large numbers of dead fish were found within a 50-metre radius of the shipyard’s main unloading ramp. Security personnel on duty reportedly observed the unusual occurrence between 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., prompting an immediate response.
Authorities say the affected area has since been secured, with a rapid-response team made up of FDA inspectors, police officers, and Tema Port officials working collaboratively to determine the cause. While investigations are ongoing, officials noted that there is currently no evidence pointing to deliberate sabotage or an immediate large-scale public health threat.
As part of the probe, between 60 and 80 fish samples, along with water samples, have been collected under strict chain-of-custody procedures for laboratory analysis.
Public Advisory Issued
The agencies have issued a strong public advisory, cautioning residents and the general public against harvesting, purchasing, or consuming fish or seafood from the Tema Shipyard and nearby areas until further notice.
However, they clarified that fish sourced from certified cold-chain markets outside the affected zone remains safe for consumption, provided it is properly cooked to a minimum internal temperature of 63°C.
The public is also being urged to report any sightings of dead or distressed fish to the FDA through its hotline or nearest office. Individuals who may have consumed fish from the affected area and are experiencing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, dizziness, or skin irritation have been advised to seek immediate medical attention.
Authorities assure that updates will be communicated as investigations progress, urging the public to rely solely on official sources for accurate information.
