Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has strongly opposed a recommendation by the Constitutional Review Committee (CRC) to extend Ghana’s presidential term from four years to five, describing the proposal as unacceptable.
Mr Kpebu made his position clear in a Facebook post on Monday, December 22, 2025, where he stated: “Extending the 4-year term to a 5-year term is a NOT NOT.”
According to the lawyer, Ghana’s current four-year presidential term provides adequate time for a sitting president to implement policies and programmes, while also ensuring regular accountability through periodic elections.
He argued that extending the tenure could weaken democratic oversight and reduce the frequency with which citizens assess the performance of elected leaders at the polls.
The proposal to extend the presidential term forms part of broader constitutional reform recommendations contained in the CRC’s final report.
The Constitutional Review Committee, chaired by Professor H. Kwasi Prempeh, presented its report to President John Dramani Mahama on December 22 at the Jubilee House.
