Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu was detained by officers at the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) on Wednesday, December 3, preventing investigators from questioning him over corruption allegations against Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng.
Kpebu, who had arrived to meet with OSP officials, reportedly clashed with police officers at the gate and was taken into custody before any interrogation could take place. Sources indicate that the Special Prosecutor could not proceed with questioning while he was in police custody.
He was subsequently granted bail requiring a landed property in his name as security, but upon the return of his lawyer, he could not be located.
The incident follows ongoing tensions between Kpebu and the Special Prosecutor, with the lawyer repeatedly criticising the OSP’s handling of investigations. He has accused the office of procedural lapses and of delegating inquiries to junior officers reporting directly to Mr. Agyebeng.
Speaking to journalists before a previous meeting at the OSP last week, Kpebu said he would only cooperate with investigators if the committee was independently constituted, arguing that the current approach undermines the integrity and fairness of the process.
He also referenced past issues involving the investigation of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, alleging that the OSP mishandled basic procedures in that case as well.
The OSP has not yet commented on Kpebu’s detention. Sources suggest he may be released later this evening.
