Mahama claims Akufo-Addo reluctant to hand over power, fears facing accountability

Supreme Court Judgment Affirming Deputy Speakers’ Right To Vote Shocking But Not Surprising – Mahama

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Mahama, says President Nana Akufo-Addo is hesitant to hand over power due to concerns about potential scrutiny of his administration.

Mr Mahama claimed that the President’s reluctance stems from fears of being held accountable if the NDC takes office after the 2024 elections.

He expressed that President Akufo-Addo appears intent on positioning Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as his successor to avoid examination of his administration’s activities.

This strategy, according to Mr Mahama, is aimed at protecting the President and his officials from potential investigations.

Speaking to supporters at a campaign rally in Lugni, located in the Wulensi constituency of the Northern Region, Mr Mahama reassured Ghanaians that, if elected, he would ensure a thorough review of all public funds allegedly misappropriated under Akufo-Addo’s leadership.

He committed to restoring accountability and transparency in the management of state resources.

Mr Mahama further emphasized that his administration would prioritise the protection of the national interest in enforcing strict measures to uncover any misuse of public funds, as part of his broader mission to strengthen good governance and integrity within government institutions.

“Instead of going in peace with his Vice President, he [President Akufo-Addo] wants to force his Vice President on the people of Ghana. The main reason is he’s afraid, he won’t hand over power to Mahama.”

“He says [he] won’t hand over power to Mahama, who are you to say you won’t hand over power to Mahama, it is the people of Ghana who will decide.”

“The reason he’s afraid to hand over power to me is because of accountability because we’re going to ask questions, we will not allow people who have stolen the money of the people to go free with the money,” he stated.
