The Manhyia South Constituency in the Ashanti Region, the Constituency of Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Vice Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to become a beehive of political activity now that Napo has been confirmed as Dr. Bawumia’s running mate and would therefore be unable to run for the parliamentary seat again.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh, who has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Manhyia South Constituency (formerly Manhyia Constituency) since January 2009 will have to make way for a new face. And several high-calibre plausible replacements have already made their intentions known.
Five persons have so far shown interest in the seat and behind-the-scenes campaigns to gain the party’s favour are already in full swing.
Akwasi Coker Gyambibi, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, Owusu Afriyie Prempeh, Kwabena Addo Amankwah and Kingsley Bobsu-Kyeretwie are the persons who have themselves out seeking to replace Dr Opoku Prempeh.
A safe seat for the NPP, the real work of these persons keen on replacing Dr Opoku Prempeh will be to win the parliamentary primary election. The party, in line with the provisions of its constitution, will soon set a date for the primaries to get a new parliamentary candidate for Manhyia South.
A very competitive, even aggressive campaign, is expected from the aspirants whose number is set to rise.
