Communications team member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Hon. Lorita Nana Hemaa, has called for a concerted national effort to fight corruption, urging the government to enforce stiffer sanctions against individuals found guilty of corrupt practices.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s Nkosuo Nsem, hosted by Obidehye Kofi Sekyi, Hon. Lorita Nana Hemaa said corruption remains a longstanding challenge that requires deliberate and sustained action to address.
She questioned how much progress Ghana has made in the fight against corruption and whether efforts over the years have produced meaningful results.
According to her, corruption cannot be effectively tackled through rhetoric alone but must be backed by concrete action.
“Corruption fighting should be backed by action,” she said.
Hon. Lorita Nana Hemaa argued that corruption has become deeply embedded in various aspects of Ghanaian society, including schools, churches, homes, politics and governance.
She said the situation demonstrates the need for citizens and institutions to make a deliberate and conscious effort to confront corrupt practices wherever they occur.
“If the whole Ghana should be committed, what have we done as individuals to fight against corruption?” she asked.
She further warned that failure to address corruption could leave future generations with a system in which corrupt practices have become normalised.
According to her, Ghanaians must change their mindset and collectively develop the determination to confront corruption if the country is to make meaningful progress.
She also stressed that both the giver and the receiver of a bribe must be held accountable, arguing that responsibility for corruption does not rest solely with the person who accepts an improper benefit.
Hon. Lorita Nana Hemaa further noted that corruption goes beyond financial transactions, pointing to practices such as blackmail as another form of wrongdoing that must be confronted.
She therefore urged citizens to take personal responsibility in the fight against corruption and support efforts to build a more accountable and transparent society.
