The long-awaited report on the recent violence in Ejura in the Ashanti region has finally been published by the government. The three-member committee that was set up by the Honourable Minister of Interior on Friday, July 2 , 2021 to probe the Ejura riots revealed that the death of Mohammed Ibrahim aka “kaaka” and the mishandling of same, was the trigger points of the riots that followed.
According to the committee, the maximum application of force worsened the situation. The committee then recommends that the District Police Commander of Ejura, DSP Philip Kojo Hammond, be transferred immediately, for his incompetence in handling the crisis and
his connection with the community appears to be irreparably damaged.
The committee also suggested that the relatives of the two deceased victims, Abdul Nasir Yusif and Murtala Suraj Mohammed, receive suitable compensation. “Other harmed people, such as Louis Ayikpa (20 years), Awal Misbau (16 years), and NasifNuhu, must also be compensated adequately (30 years)”, the report added.
The committee further recommended that the Ejura Police Station be structurally expanded with increasing number of personnel, as well as the removal of Honourable Mohammed Salisu Bamba, the Ejura–Sekyedumase Municipal Chief Executive.
Ibrahim Mohammed, also known as Macho Kaaka, was attacked by a mob, and he later died at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital on Monday, June 28, 2021, Witness accounts revealed that the deceased was ambushed in front of his house when he was returning home on his motorbike at about 1:30 am on Sunday, June 27, 2021.
The death of Kaaka triggered widespread anger among the youth who took to the streets of Ejura, clad in red armbands and headgears, to protest.
The irate youth blocked roads while returning from the burial of Kaaka, in their quest to demand that the culprits are found and brought to book.
This resulted in the death of two, and four others injured, as security officials deployed to the scene shot into the crowd.
