A Ghanaian lawyer has taken legal action against the National Roads Authority (NRA) over the deteriorating condition of the Agona-Swedru–Winneba Highway, a major route that connects Central Region communities to key commercial hubs.

According to the suit, the highway has become increasingly dangerous and nearly unmotorable, posing serious risks to road users, residents, and businesses that depend on the stretch. The lawyer argues that continuous neglect of the road has contributed to frequent accidents, vehicle damage, and delays, all of which disrupt economic activities and endanger lives.
The plaintiff noted that despite repeated complaints by drivers, residents, and transport unions, the relevant authorities have failed to take meaningful steps to repair or rehabilitate the road. The suit claims that the deplorable condition of the highway violates the state’s responsibility to ensure safe and accessible road infrastructure for the public.
The Agona-Swedru–Winneba Highway is a critical transport link within the Central Region, serving traders, commuters, students, farmers, and businesses. Many locals say that potholes, erosion, and uneven surfaces have turned the highway into a hazard, especially during the rainy season when parts of the stretch become nearly impassable.
The lawyer is seeking a court order compelling the National Roads Authority to immediately undertake repairs, maintenance, and long-term reconstruction of the affected sections. The legal action is also intended to set a precedent that public institutions must be held accountable when their inaction puts citizens at risk.
Residents have welcomed the move, stating that legal pressure may finally prompt authorities to prioritize the road. Some transport operators have also expressed hope that the lawsuit will speed up government intervention, noting that the poor state of the road has increased their maintenance costs and forced many to abandon the route entirely.
This case adds to growing public frustration over deteriorating road infrastructure in several parts of the country. It also highlights rising citizen willingness to challenge state agencies through legal means when essential public services are neglected.
As the court prepares to hear the case, many Ghanaians are watching closely to see whether this action will trigger overdue improvements to the highway and enhance accountability in road management across the country.
