GPL: Kwadwo Obeng Jr scores as Heart of Lions defeat Asante Kotoko in Obuasi

Heart of Lions pulled off a surprise victory over Asante Kotoko in Obuasi, handing the Porcupine Warriors their second consecutive loss of the season.

A lone goal from former Hearts of Oak striker Kwadwo Obeng Jr. sealed the 1-0 win for the visitors at Len Clay Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Kotoko, hoping to bounce back from their midweek defeat to Legon Cities, found themselves struggling against a well-organized Lions side coached by their former manager, Bashir Hayford.

Lions took the lead in the 28th minute when Kotoko goalkeeper Mohamed Camara’s attempted clearance went awry, allowing Obeng Jr. to slot the ball into an empty net with ease. This decisive goal marked Lions’ first away win of the season.

Despite dominating possession with 62% and attempting 10 shots compared to Lions’ 4, Kotoko couldn’t find a way past a resilient Lions defence. Notably, both teams registered just one shot on target, reflecting the tightly contested nature of the encounter.

The result drops Kotoko from second to third place on the league table. They’ll aim to regroup in their next fixture away against Bechem United.

Meanwhile, Heart of Lions climbed to seventh and will look to build on this momentum when they host Berekum Chelsea in their next match.
