A quantity of students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have been deferred by the University following their inability to pay their school fees.

The University in its earlier launch indicated that each one students who haven’t paid at the least 70 p.c of their school fees by seventh April, 2022, can be deferred routinely.

However, Citi News checks confirmed that the coverage didn’t take impact instantly as individuals who fall inside that class have been allowed to write their mid-semester examination which started on eleventh April, 2022.

The University Relations officer of KNUST, Dr. Daniel Norris Bekoe, in an interview with Citi News mentioned the University’s choice is justified as some students use school fees given to them to have interaction in playing and different stuff.

Some students, nevertheless, said that they’re genuinely needy and the students’ bursaries and different scholarships that they had utilized for had not taken impact and as such, they need the school to lengthen the interval.

The affected students appeared to have had some type of respite for the reason that deferment didn’t happen routinely.

In what seems to be a twist, some students informed Citi News on Tuesday, nineteenth April, 2022, that they’ve began receiving messages that they’ve been deferred due to their inability to meet the minimal necessities of the KNUST fees Credit and Debt Management Policy.

“Dear student, your programme has been deferred as you have not met the minimum requirement of the KNUST fees Credit and Debt Management Policy. Thank you,” one of the messages learn.

A 3rd-year scholar who says he has paid greater than fifty (50) p.c of the school fees informed Citi News he has been affected.

“The University has started deferring students. I have paid more than 50% of the school fees, but I have received a message that I have been deferred. The bursary that I applied for (Ketewaa Biara Nsua, KBN, by the SRC) has not reflected,” the nervous scholar lamented.

Some students are nervous that their scenario can be compounded if they’re deferred since they’d have to pay extra for lodging for the subsequent tutorial which may be greater than the school fees.

They are thus calling on authorities to discover methods of extending it for them.
