A 29-year-old man, John Kiama Wambua, was arrested by police in Kenya after officers found the mutilated body parts of his 19-year-old wife in his backpack during a routine patrol in Huruma, near Nairobi.
Wambua allegedly confessed that the dismembered remains belonged to his wife, Joy Fridah Munani, and appeared unfazed by the chilling discovery.
Further investigation led police to his home, where more body parts, a knife, and blood-stained clothing were found hidden under a bed.
This heinous crime comes amidst a rising wave of femicides in Kenya, with at least 97 women killed between August and October last year.
The National Police Service and activists have condemned the surge in violence against women, which has led to protests, some of which were met with police violence.
Wambua is expected to face formal murder charges in an upcoming court hearing.
