JUSAG threatens to withdraw staff support for Supreme Court proceedings over strike

JUSAG strike continues despite progress in talks with Judicial Service management

The Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) has threatened to withdraw all its members working at the Supreme Court if the ongoing strike is not resolved by the end of this week.

The association’s General Secretary, Abdulai Yakubu, said members at the apex court had been instructed to ensure that Wednesday’s sitting was the last to receive support from judicial service staff during the industrial action.

Speaking on the development, Mr Yakubu said the association was initially surprised that the Supreme Court continued sitting after the strike began.

He explained that JUSAG leadership had engaged its members after the court held its first sitting during the strike, believing it would be a one-off occurrence.

However, the leadership was taken aback when the court sat again on Wednesday.

Mr Yakubu clarified that the association was not opposed to the Supreme Court conducting its business but objected to judicial service staff being required to facilitate proceedings while the strike remained in force.

He noted that the court did not sit on Thursday and suggested that it might also not hold proceedings on Friday.

The General Secretary warned that if the dispute remained unresolved by the close of the week, all JUSAG members working at the Supreme Court would be directed to stay away from work.

He further cautioned management against coercing staff into violating the strike directive.

Mr Yakubu maintained that the industrial action was protected under international labour laws to which Ghana is a signatory.
