The Juaben Municipal Chief Executive nominee, Alex Sarfo Kantanka has been arrested by the police for allegedly bribing some Assembly members in his area to vote for him.
His arrest comes after a video of him demanding monies he paid to some Assembly members to vote for him, went viral; a situation most Ghanaians took to social media to express their disgust and calling for his arrest for committing a crime.
Confirming the arrest of the nominee, the Ghana Police Service issued a press release on its Twitter page where it announced it has arrested Mr Alex Sarfo Kantanka, the Juaben Municipal Chief Executive nominee, whose video went viral on the internet.
The police statement continued that the MCE nominee was arrested by Ashanti Region police on November 1, 2021, and expected to assist the police with investigating over the alleged bribing of some Assembly members of the municipality.
The police further explaining the reason for Mr. Kantanka’s arrest, noted that it did so base on some of the scenes captured in the viral video and specifically mentioned the instance where the nominee was seen and heard allegedly seen seeking repayment of money which he allegedly paid to assembly members “to vote for his confirmation as the Municipal Chief Executive for the Juaben Municipal Area.”
According to the police statement, the arrest of Mr. Kantanka is expected to aid in their investigation in getting what it termed as ‘complete truth’ about the alleged bribes he offered to the Assembly members.
Mr Alex Sarfo Kantanka has however been granted bail after his Investigation Caution Statement was taken. Despite the MCE nominee’s release, the police say he will continue to assist them in their continued investigation over the matter and reminded the public that no one was above the law.
