Interior Ministry Debunks August 4 Holiday Claims

Monday, September 23 declared public holiday
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Ministry of the Interior has announced that Monday, August 4, 2025, will not be observed as a statutory public holiday.

In a statement issued on July 31, the Ministry explained that commemorative days are not classified as public holidays and therefore do not warrant the suspension of work or public activity.

August 4 was previously marked as Founder’s Day to honour the formation of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), seen as a key moment in Ghana’s journey to independence. However, the designation was reviewed following recent legislative changes.

In June 2025, Parliament passed a new bill that reinstated September 21, the birthday of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, as Founders’ Day, a national holiday in honour of Ghana’s independence struggle.

The Interior Ministry is therefore urging the public and institutions to take note and plan accordingly, as August 4 will be observed as a regular working day.
