The executive secretary of the National Labour Commission (NLC) Mr Ofosu Asamoah has asked company owners and the government to fulfil all the conditions and services due their workers to avoid the rampant strike occurrences in the country.
Mr Asamoah in an interview with Maxwell Ohene Addo, host of Plan-B FM’s morning show noted that strikes in recent times have become rampant and added that a lot more has to be done to ensure a reverse in the trend.
He noted that from the perspective of the NLC, the strike by the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), is illegal which should not have taken place.
He continued that the norm is that before any union goes on strike they should have looked into the issue they want to strike on to make sure that it was the only option to them after exhausting every avenue that could have resolved their grievances and asked if same was done by UTAG before embarking on the strike.
“NLC in a meeting with the UTAG leadership has agreed that they violated the process and agreed to call the strike off” he revealed.
Accorsing to him, the demand by UTAG was 23 conditions of services and the government had settled 20 out of the aforementioned figure which meant that there are only 3 of those issues to be settled.
Concluding he pointed out that the government has indicated that the fact that 20 out of the 23 issues they presented have been settled means that it is poised to get their grievances resolved .
He encouraged the leadership of UTAG to take a second look at their decision to go on strike adding that it could have been avoided if the effort of the government had been looked at.
