“I’m very calm, but disappointed” — Yaw Ampofo Ankrah breaks silence

Lawyer denies Yaw Ampofo Ankrah’s involvement in $600,000 World Cup visa allegations

Suspended National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah has broken his silence following his suspension from office, saying he remains calm but is disappointed by the development.

“I’m very calm, but a bit disappointed,” Ampofo Ankrah said in his first public comments following the decision.

His suspension comes amid heightened scrutiny of the management of Ghana’s sporting facilities and investigations into allegations surrounding a visa facilitation arrangement linked to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ampofo Ankrah and some officials of the NSA have reportedly been questioned by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) as part of investigations into the allegations.

The NSA has previously denied authorising any visa facilitation or money-collection scheme and indicated that it was cooperating with the investigation.

Ampofo Ankrah’s tenure at the NSA had also faced growing pressure over concerns about the condition and management of major sporting facilities, including the Accra Sports Stadium and Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

His suspension follows the earlier dissolution of the NSA’s governing board by President John Dramani Mahama in September.

The former Director-General has yet to publicly provide details of his disappointment or respond in depth to the allegations surrounding the visa arrangement.

His latest comment, however, signals his first public reaction since his suspension from the leadership of the Authority.
