In a stern address at the National Eid-ul-Fitr prayers in Accra on Monday, President John Dramani Mahamacondemned the illegal construction of buildings in waterways, attributing the practice as partly responsible for devastating floods in some communities.
The President condemned the “reckless disregard for planning regulations and environmental safety” that has resulted in the encroachment on vital water retention areas and designated Ramseyer sites.
“This must stop!” the President stated. “We will not allow a few selfish individuals to endanger the lives and livelihoods of countless others.”
He made it clear that these actions would not be tolerated, announcing the imminent demolition of all illegal structures obstructing waterways.
He stressed that the government is committed to upholding the law and protecting the interests of the wider community.
“Those structures will be pulled down,” he firmly declared. “The law will be enforced, and those who flout it will face the consequences.”
